Certified Mechanical Heritage: The 75-Year-Old Music Box Behind Our Motor Business

A very early model of a domestically produced 18-note music box movement (drive mechanism), believed to have been manufactured around 1951 by Nidec Instruments , formerly known as Sankyo Seiki Manufacturing, has been designated a "Mechanical Heritage" by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers for 2026.

The spring-driven technology of this movement later became the foundation for the development of motors, which are now the core business of the Nidec Group, through applications such as 8mm film cameras.

The precious wooden music box containing this certified movement is on display until the end of August at the Nidec Sankyo Music Box Museum Suwanone, an interactive museum located in Japan.
